Introduction
The UK Spouse Visa allows the husband, wife or civil partner of a person settled in UK to join them and live together in the UK. The visa generally grants an initial stay of 2 years and 9 months for people applying outside of the UK after which you may apply for an extension to continue your stay.
Who can apply for a UK Spouse Visa?
To be eligible for a UK spouse visa, your partner must already be in the UK as:
A British or Irish citizen.
A person with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or “settled status”
A person with pre-settled status (under the EU Settlement Scheme)
A person with refugee status or humanitarian protection.
Both you and your partner must be at least 18 years old at the time of submitting the application.
Key Requirements for applying UK Spouse Visa in April 2026
Relationship Requirements
To qualify for a UK spouse visa, you must prove that your relationship is genuine and subsisting.
Your marriage or civil partnership must be legally recognised in the country where it took place.
If you and your partner are not married, you must prove that you have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years.
Both the applicant and the sponsor must be at least 18 years of age.
You must demonstrate that you intend to live together permanently in the UK once the visa is granted.
Financial Requirement (Income Threshold)
To ensure that the families can support themselves, without relying on public funds, the sponsor must meet specific income levels as provided in the Appendix FM.
The current annual salary requirement for sponsor is £29,000. You must provide 6 to 12 months of payslips, bank statements and a letter from the employer.
If income threshold is not met through salary, you can rely on savings. The current required amount of savings, if no salary is being relied upon, is £88,500.
These requirements are explained in further detail below.
English Language Requirement
Most new applicants must prove their English language skills through one of the following:
Pass an approved English Language Test at the A1 level or higher
You may be exempted from the test , if you have a degree taught in English that is recognized as equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher.
Applicants aged 65 years or over , or those with specific long term disabilities may also be exempted from this testing.
Suitable Accommodation Standards
You must demonstrate that you have a place to live that meets UK housing standards without the need for government assistance.
The property must not be overcrowded. It should have enough living space for the couple and any of theor dependants.
You will need to provide a tenancy agreement, land registry title, or a letter of invitation from a homeowner as proof of accommodation.
Financial Requirements for applying UK Spouse Visa as of April 2026
Meeting the financial requirement is often the most technical and stressful part of the UK Spouse Visa application.
As of April 2026, the financial rules remain stringent. This guide details how to navigate the current thresholds and evidence your income correctly:
1. The Minimum Income Threshold
For all new applications submitted in 2026, the standard Minimum Income Requirement is £29,000 per year (Gross).
Important Clarifications:
If you are applying under the new post-April 2024 rules, the threshold no longer increases for dependent children
If you or your spouse held your initial partner visa before April 11, 2024, you may still be eligible under the old threshold of £18,600. Always confirm which rules apply to your specific extension.
2. Ways to Meet the Requirement
The Home Office allows you to meet the £29,000 target through various "Categories." Each has its own strict evidentiary rules.
A. Employment Income
The UK-based partner must show they earn at least £29,000 in gross income annually. This is further classified into two categories:
Category A: If the sponsor has been with the same employer for at least 6 months.
Category B: If the sponsor has been with their employer for less than 6 months, they must prove they currently earn £29,000 as wells as that they have earned a total of £29,000 in the 12 months prior to the application.
B. Self-Employment
The sponsors who are sole traders or directors of a specified limited company in the U, must rely upon the income from the last full financial year.
C. Cash Savings
If you do not meet the income threshold through your employment, you can rely entirely on savings. However, the amount required is significantly more.
The Formula when relying upon both employment income and savings is: (Income Shortfall x 2.5) + £16,000.
If you are relying upon the savings alone to fulfil the financial requirement, you need £88,500. These funds must have been held in a regulated bank for at least 6 months before making the application.
3. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many applicants face refusal due to lack of the evidence or incorrect documents. Some of the common mistakes to avoid while applying for a UK spouse visa are as follows:
You must have a formal letter from the employer confirming your salary, position, and length of employment. Merely relying on the payslips may not be sufficient.
The Home Office has a very stringent approach towards evidence scrutinization and only accepts income statement from regulated financial institutions.
Under current rules, you cannot combine cash savings with self-employment income to meet the financial requirement for a UK Spouse visa.

For the applicants who are applying from outside the UK , the processing time for a UK spouse visa is as follows:
