Eligibility & key rules (UK applicants) Core conditions
Remote work:
Employees must work only for non-Spanish companies.
Freelancers may include Spanish clients up to 20% of total activity.
Background & skills: University degree or 3+ years’ relevant professional experience.
NIE first (London): A NIE is required before you file your application.
Residence in district: Provide proof of residence in the London consular district with your file.
Financial requirements (2025)
Show stable income ≥ 200% SMI (main applicant) + 75% SMI for a spouse/partner + 25% SMI per additional dependent.
SMI 2025: €1,184/month in 14 pays → 200% = €2,368/month on a 14-pay basis (≈ €2,762.66 using a 12-pay conversion).
Consulates generally reference the SMI percentage, not a fixed euro amount align your evidence accordingly.
Documents (London-specific checklist)
Identity & photo
Passport: Valid ≥ 1 year, ≥ 2 blank pages, not issued over 10 years ago.
Photo: One recent passport-size colour photo on a light background, face forward; no reflective/dark glasses or face covering.
NIE
NIE issued before applying.
Criminal records
ACRO (and police certificates for any other countries lived in during the last 2 years) — original + copy.
Signed declaration confirming no criminal record in the last 5 years.
Certificates not older than 6 months unless they state a longer validity.
Foreign certificates: apostille/legalisation and official Spanish translation where required.
Health insurance
Public or private policy with full coverage in Spain.
S1 is accepted when registered with Spanish Social Security.
Employment / freelance proof
Evidence of at least 3 months working with a foreign employer/client before applying.
If employed: contract length, explicit consent to work remotely from Spain, and salary.
If self-employed: contracts + terms confirming remote work from Spain.
Company registry evidence (e.g., Companies House) stating the date of creation and type of business.
Professional experience: University degree or proof of ≥ 3 years in your field (HMRC Employment History printout accepted).
Social Security (choose one path)
UK coverage: A1 certificate (CA3822 employees / CA3837 self-employed) and a responsible declaration to comply with UK NI obligations; or
Spanish coverage: registration proofs (e.g., RETA for autónomos) and a declaration to comply with Spanish obligations (and to state if UK coverage still applies).
Financial means
≥ 200% SMI for main applicant + 75%/25% SMI for dependants.
Evidence: any reasonable proof (e.g., contracts, bank statements, payslips).
Family members
Marriage/partnership or birth certificates (apostilled/legalised and translated as required).
Adult children: financial dependency and civil status evidence.
Ascendants: proof they are in the applicant’s care.
Proof of residence in the consular district
Utility bill, tenancy, council tax etc., as applicable.
Non-British nationals applying in the UK
Provide a valid UK residence permit.
Representative submissions (optional)
A duly accredited representative may submit: provide representative’s ID and power of attorney (foreign PoA: apostilled/legalised and translated where required).
How to apply from the UK (simple flow)
Check eligibility (remote role, degree/3+ years, income ≥ 200% SMI).
Obtain your NIE (required before applying in London).
Gather documents (ACRO + apostille/translation, insurance, employer/client letters, income proofs, company registry extract, social security route).
Book and submit at BLS Spain Visa Application Centre, 20 St Andrew Street, London EC4A 3AG.
Proof of receipt & tracking: you’ll receive a receipt with a code to check your case status online.
Decision: legal deadline 10 days (may be extended if interview or extra documents are requested).
Collection: collect the visa within 1 month of notification (you or your representative).
Validity & next step: visa valid up to 1 year. A TIE card is not compulsory (the visa proves legal residence), but you may apply for a TIE in Spain.
Planning to stay longer? Apply to UGE-CE in the last 2 months before the visa expires to continue residence.

Taxes (high-level)

If refused (appeals)
Reconsideration to the Consulate within 1 month from the day after notification; and/or
Contentious-administrative appeal to the High Court of Justice of Madrid within 2 months from the day after notification (or from the dismissal of reconsideration).
